Vienna Film Festival at Rathausplatz
There are certain places in Vienna that completely change with the seasons, and Rathausplatz is probably our favourite example.
In winter, we come here for Christmas markets and ice skating.
But during the long summer evenings, the square in front of Vienna City Hall turns into something completely different: a huge open-air festival filled with music, food, drinks and people enjoying one of the nicest times of year in Vienna.

The Film Festival at Vienna's Rathausplatz has been part of summer in the city since 1991, and in 2026 it celebrates its 36th edition.
And perhaps the best part is that admission is completely free.
Whether we come for a concert film, dinner with friends, a drink after work or simply to enjoy a warm evening in the city, the Film Festival has become one of those Vienna summer traditions we return to again and again.
When Is the Vienna Film Festival in 2026?
The 36th Film Festival at Vienna's Rathausplatz takes place from July 4 to September 6, 2026.
The festival area is open daily from 11:00 until midnight, with the food stands operating during the day and evening.
The films themselves begin after sunset.
This is important if you are visiting for the first time. We don't need to wait until nighttime to come here. In fact, we often prefer arriving earlier, having something to eat, finding a good place to sit and letting the evening slowly begin around us.
By the time the Rathaus lights up and the giant screen comes alive, the entire atmosphere has changed.
Is the Vienna Film Festival Free?
Yes, completely.
There are no entrance tickets required for the Film Festival at Rathausplatz.
We can simply walk into the festival area, choose something to eat or drink and enjoy the evening.
There are around 3,000 places in the cinema area, but seats cannot be reserved. This is why arriving earlier is a good idea when there is something particularly popular on the programme.
The relaxed approach is actually part of what we like about the festival. We don't necessarily have to plan an entire evening around it.
Sometimes we come specifically for a performance. Other times we simply walk through Rathausplatz, get something to eat and stay because the atmosphere is good.
What Can We Watch at the Film Festival?
Despite the name, don't expect a traditional outdoor cinema showing the latest Hollywood films.
The Vienna Film Festival at Rathausplatz is centred around music and performance.
On the enormous screen in front of the Rathaus, we can watch everything from opera and classical concerts to rock, pop, jazz, musicals, ballet and contemporary dance.
And the screen really is enormous, around 300 square metres.
The 2026 programme includes concert films and performances featuring major international artists and productions. This year's programme includes names such as Bruce Springsteen, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna, Prince, Bob Dylan, Elton John and Johnny Cash, alongside opera, classical music and other performing arts.
This variety is one reason we think the festival works so well.
We don't necessarily need to be opera lovers or classical music experts. One evening might be devoted to a major opera production, while another can feel much closer to attending an enormous outdoor pop or rock concert.
The Food Is Half the Experience
For us, the Film Festival isn't only about what is playing on the screen.
Food is a huge part of the experience.
The area in front of the Rathaus becomes a large international food court, with restaurants and food concepts serving dishes from different parts of the world.
In 2026, 29 gastronomy businesses are participating.
We can find international street food, Austrian dishes, desserts, drinks and plenty of options for sitting outside with something cold on a hot Vienna evening.
The food area opens from 11:00, so it is also possible to come for lunch without staying for the evening film.
Our favourite way to experience the festival, however, is later in the day.
Come around 18:00 or 19:00, walk around the food stands before deciding what to eat, find a table, order a drink and stay for the screening once darkness arrives.
It feels less like going to the cinema and more like spending an entire summer evening outdoors in Vienna.
There Is More Than Just the Big Screen
One of the things that visitors sometimes miss is how much happens around the main Film Festival programme.
In 2026 there are more than 100 additional programme events.
From Monday to Wednesday, DJs bring music to the festival area during the early evening.
There are also live performances and special music events during the week.
Every Sunday, the Jazz Brunch brings live jazz to Rathausplatz from midday, making Sunday one of our favourite times to visit if we want a completely different atmosphere from the nighttime screenings.
Families should also know about the Children's Opera Festival.
Every Friday at 17:00, children's opera and music productions are shown on a separate screen in Rathauspark.
So although most photographs of the festival show the enormous screen at night, there is actually plenty happening during daylight hours too.
What Happens if It Rains?
Vienna summers can go from sunshine to thunderstorms surprisingly quickly.
The Film Festival generally continues in wind and rain. Screenings still take place and the gastronomy area remains open.
Only when the weather becomes dangerous, for example during severe thunderstorms, strong winds or hail, can the festival area be evacuated for safety reasons.
If the forecast looks questionable, we recommend checking the official festival information before heading to Rathausplatz.
And bringing a light rain jacket is never a terrible idea in Vienna.
How to Get to the Vienna Film Festival
The festival could hardly be easier to reach.
It takes place directly at:
If we are already exploring central Vienna, we can easily walk here from places such as the Parliament, Burgtheater, MuseumsQuartier or the Hofburg.
By public transport, the easiest connections include:
U2: Rathaus
Tram 2: Rathaus
Trams 1, 71 and D: Rathausplatz
For tourists staying in the centre, we definitely wouldn't recommend driving. Public transport is easier, and part of the pleasure of a summer evening here is being able to have a glass of wine or a cocktail without thinking about the car afterwards.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?
If we are coming mainly for the food and atmosphere, we like arriving in the early evening.
Around 18:00 gives us enough time to walk around, choose food without rushing and enjoy Rathausplatz before the film starts.
If there is a particular performance we really want to watch, we would arrive earlier.
There are thousands of seats, but there is no reservation system, and popular evenings naturally attract more people.
For a more relaxed experience, lunchtime or early afternoon is completely different. The food stalls are already operating, but the large nighttime crowds haven't arrived yet.
Sunday is another interesting option because of the Jazz Brunch.
Is the Film Festival Good for Families?
Yes.
The festival itself is very relaxed and open, and families can simply walk through the area without buying tickets or committing to an entire performance.
Friday is particularly interesting because of the Children's Opera Festival at 17:00 in Rathauspark.
We also like the fact that families can arrive early, have dinner and leave whenever the children have had enough. There is no ticket price making us feel that we have to stay until the end.
Our Tips Before You Go
If there is a specific concert, opera or performance you want to see, check the programme before visiting.
If you're coming mainly for the atmosphere, we actually think less planning is better.
Arrive hungry, don't immediately buy from the first food stand you see, walk around and see what everyone is serving first.
On popular evenings, come earlier if you want a good seat.
And don't worry if classical music isn't normally your thing. Check the programme because the festival covers much more than opera.
Most importantly, don't think of this as simply watching a film outdoors.
Why We Love the Film Festival at Rathausplatz
There are bigger tourist attractions in Vienna, but the Film Festival gives visitors something slightly different: a chance to experience how the city itself enjoys summer.
We see office workers meeting here after work, couples having dinner, families walking through Rathauspark, tourists discovering the festival almost accidentally and groups of friends staying until late in the evening.
Behind everything stands the illuminated Vienna City Hall, which is difficult to beat as a backdrop.
And because there is no entrance fee, there is no pressure to make an entire event out of it.
We can stay for 30 minutes or spend the whole evening here.
For us, that is exactly why the Film Festival works.
It isn't only something to put on a Vienna sightseeing list. It is a place to slow down, order something good, sit outside on a warm summer evening and enjoy the city.
And if you are visiting Vienna between July 4 and September 6, 2026, we would definitely make room for at least one evening at Rathausplatz.
